This Week in Gators Athletics | October 5th | Home Doubleheader Wednesday

AUBURN, Wash. (GRC) — All three fall sports are active this week with about a month to go in each regular season.Wednesday brings two home games for the Gators, a double header of sorts. 

Volleyball
Green River Women's Volleyball has one game this week, it is a home game with the Lower Columbia College Red Devils. The match up is set for 6:30 p.m. in The Swamp on Wednesday October 7th. This is the second game of the Wednesday home double header along with women's soccer. LCC enters the contest ranked #8 in the NWAC Coaches Poll. The Red Devils sit atop the west region standings with an unblemished 5-0 record (11-4 overall). GRC still sits in playoff contention in fourth place with a 2-3 west region record (10-10 overall). Riria Fujiwara has the second most digs per set in the NWAC during region play with 5 digs per set. Fujiwara also has the seventh most total digs during that time. Aiyana Brown holds to top spot in the NWAC in kills per set on the season with 4.04. Norah Frame is 12th in the NWAC during region competition with fve solo blocks. Evelina Mykhalchuk currently holds the ninth most assists per set during region games with 6.41. This week will conclude the first round of west region action for Green River.

Soccer
GRC has two match ups this week. On Wednesday October 7th at 1:00 p.m. at Wilson Playfields the Gators battle with rival Highline. This is this first game of the home double header with volleyball playing later in the evening. The Thunderbirds land at #8 in the NWAC Coaches poll and occupy second place in the west region. The last time out against HC, Green River secured the shutout with a 1-0 victory. Luci Ramey scored the lone goal in the upset win on the road. On Saturday October 10th the green and black head to Centralia to take on the Trailblazers at Bob Peters Field. Kick off is slated for noon. This is the first tilt with Centralia College this season for Green River soccer. The Trailblazers sit in fourth place in the west, one spot above the Gators. Centralia has one less loss and one more tie than Green River currently. After this week the green and black close out their season with five consecutive home games.

Cross Country
The Gator distance runners return to action this week after a bye last week. On Saturday Green River travels to Seattle to compete in the Emerald City Open at Lower Woodland Park along side Green Lake. The Women's 6K begins at 10:30 a.m. and the Men's 8K follows at 11:15 a.m. There is also a community 2K run for adults and kids at noon. The course consists of one 2000m loop, run three times for the 6k and four for the 8k. The race begins in a grassy clearing. Emerald City Open was started by the University of Washington in 1989. In the mid-1990s, with the advent of the Sundodger Classic, Seattle University was given the meet to host. Club Northwest started helping SU in 1997, and took over in 2017. Since then, Club Northwest has been proud to continue providing a competitive early-season cross country meet in Seattle, for both collegiate and post collegiate teams.

Abigail Collier has the fastest women's 5K time in the NWAC this year, 19:09.7 minutes achieved at the Puget Sound Invitational. Collier has the eighth quickest 6K finish in the NWAC this season as well, 22:55.6 minutes - a GRC record. Collier completed this time at the PLU Invitational. 
On the men's side, Beckett Sias currently holds the 15th spot in the 8K for the NWAC, 26:47.5 from the Bill Roe Inviational. Sias also has the 12th fastest 5K time clocked at 17:14.5.
